We are unable to offer lending rights to students over the summer holiday period, except where courses run through the summer.

The Library will close on Thursday 26th May at 8 pm (PCs and printers go off at 7.45 pm) and re-open on Tuesday, 31st May, at 8.30 am.

Resources borrowing and Athens account

Students returning to study at City of Glasgow College in Autumn 2011 can sign up for a new Athens account, once they have received their new matriculation card.

Our opening hours over the next few weeks will be affected by the Spring Break, the Easter break, public holidays and an additional day's closure to accommodate staff training.

In summary....

Monday 4th - Thursday 7th April: we will be open 8.30 am to 4.45 pm - PCs and printers switched off at 4.30

Friday 8th April - CLOSED all day to allow Library staff to attend internal training

Monday 11th April - Friday 15th April : we will be open 8.30 am to 4.45 pm - PCs and printers switched off at 4.30

Monday 18th - Thursday 21st April: normal opening hours - 8.30 am to 8 pm - PCs and printers switched off at 7.45 pm

Good Friday 22nd April and Easter Monday 25th April - CLOSED all day

Tuesday 26th - Thursday 28th April: normal opening hours - 8.30 am to 8 pm - PCs and printers switched off at 7.45 pm

If so, you should receive an e-mail confirming your Athens ID and your password.

If you haven't received a confirmation e-mail:

check your e-mail trash or junk folder - the e-mail may have been treated as spam or junk by your e-mail service (especially if it is Hotmail address)

otherwise you can call by the library enquiry desk and ask for your details in person

Did you know that the student matriculation card you get at the start of term is also you library borrowing card?

For future reference:

You will need to produce a valid Central College Glasgow 2010-11 card to borrow materials

The matriculation number on your card (starts OC1011...) is the number you need to complete your Athens application form

Please carry your matriculation card with you at all times and produce it, if requested to do so by a member of College staff

Extended evening opening from 6th September 2010

Next time you log in to Athens, have a look at the John Johnson Collection. The image to the right gives you an idea of the curiosities on offer.

This collection provides access to thousands of items selected from the John Johnson Collection of Printed Ephemera, offering unique insights into the changing nature of everyday life in Britain in the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Categories include Nineteenth-Century Entertainment, the Booktrade, Popular Prints, Crimes, Murders and Executions, and Advertising.

You'll find this Collection in the Resources tab. Ask a member of the Learning Resources team if you need any further help using this fascinating service.

Access to PCs 12th May 2010

The legendary thin client PCs have arrived and Central College technicians are working to install them over the next few days.

Unfortunately, this means learners will have limited access to computing facilities, for a few days to come.

This also means we can't book PCs at present, as we are unable to guarantee availability.

Please bear with us during this time - we are trying to make sure as many PCs are available as possible!

Important PC changes will affect all learners as "thin client" comes to The Learning Curve

During the next few weeks, all the PCs in The Learning Curve will be upgraded to a thin client system.

This means that a lot of the traditional functions carried out by the PC base unit will now be run remotely from a server. Base units will be replaced by smaller terminals into which you can plug USB memory sticks.

Far more importantly for learners, this will have an immediate impact:

all documents or files not saved to the student I drive or to a USB memory stick will be lost

All our learners are urged to ensure that:

they log on properly to the network and deal with any password or related problems when they arise
all documents and files are saved securely to their I drive network space or to a USB memory stick
before they log off, they double-check that all documents and files are saved and backed up

If you need any assistance with saving documents, please contact our Library enquiry desk.

New block - new reading?

With the start of the Block 3, and the inevitable march towards the end of the academic year, remember to check your book loans.

Renew your loans at the Enquiry Desk, over the phone, or online (ask staff for details)
Don't forget to bring back any items you no longer want and avoid getting overdue notices!

College and Learning Curve closure - Monday 19th April 2010

Please note that Central College will be closed all day on Monday, 19th April.

This is to allow all staff to participate in a conference with future merger partners, Glasgow Metropolitan College and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies.

As a result, The Learning Curve will also be closed all day until 5pm, when the Allan Glen's building re-opens.

Evening classes will run as scheduled that evening.

Easter opening hours from Friday 2nd April 2010

Using your Central College network login for the first time

During the next few days, your course leaders will be letting you know your personal network logins. This gives you access to the internet and your own storage space on the network and allows you to set up and activate your College e-mail account.

If you have problems logging on successfully to the College network, ask a member of Learning Resources team for assistance.

Staff can provide advice with logging in and, if necessary, get technical help with updating passwords or solving persistent problems.

You can contact Learning Resources staff through the enquiry desk by the library entrance, or by flagging them down when passing.

Bear in mind the following advice when using the College network...

your user ID starts with a full stop. Use all punctuation in your username
do not "check" the workstation only box - this stops you connecting to the network
take care to remember your network and e-mail details and passwords
always change your passwords when prompted - otherwise you will be locked out the network
save your work as you go - work is most commonly lost by not naming and saving new documents

Celebration BBQ - possible impact on The Learning Curve Thursday, 19th June

Early closure of The Learning Curve - Thursday 28th May

We will be closing early on Thursday, 28th May, to accommodate Central College's Fashion Show. As this starts at 5 pm, access to The Learning Curve will be restricted to allow the show's set up.

It is expected that access to book stacks, study tables, lap top tables and interview rooms will be closed from early afternoon.

Exact details about the timing of closure will be posted nearer the time.

New online resource at Central College - Business Insights

To complement our existing resources at Central College, The Learning Curve can now offer learners access to Business Insights.

Business Insights will be of value to staff and learners involved in marketing, retail marketing, supply chain management, international business, business management and ICT courses.

As well as the information included in the reports, Business Insights provides learners with good examples of how business reports are structured. Statistical information is also available and clearly laid out in the resource.

The text of Business Insights can be translated into French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese and Korean. Translated text is displayed alongside the English text.

More loans for your buck...

Following requests from borrowers, and to help students with their studies and research, we have increased Central College students borrowing limit from a maximum of five items to ten.

The borrowed items can be a combination of books, DVDs or periodicals. Loan periods remain at either 7 or 28 days according to the item.

Early closure for Chinese New Year event

The Learning Curve will be the venue for Central College Glasgow's Chinese New Year event on Monday, 9th February.

As a result, The Learning Curve will be closed for preparations from 3pm in the afternoon. Normal opening will resume on Tuesday, 10th February.

Below is a guide to our opening hours during the festive period. However, we strongly advise phoning ahead to check for any revision to opening hours, when term finishes. You can call us directly on 0141 271 6240.

E-books are go...

Following our recent successful trial of e-books we have decided to invest in several texts which will be available to you online.

Some of the benefits of e-books are:

Multiple readers can view an e-book simultaneously
E- books can be downloaded using Adobe Reader to a USB or laptop for a designated period (usually 7 days maximum)
Up to 5% of the book can be copied or printed out (the system calculates the percentage in line with copyright legislation) per user

To access e-books go to http://www.dawsonera.com and log in using your id and password. Remote access is also available 24/7 via an Athens password.

Help with logging on to the College computer network

If you have problems logging on successfully to the College network, ask a member of The Learning Curve team for assistance.

Staff can provide advice with logging in and, if necessary, get technical help with updating passwords or solving persistent problems.

You can contact Learning Curve staff through the enquiry desk by the library entrance, or by flagging them down when passing.

Quiet Zone relocated to Allan Glen's building

If you are looking for somewhere away from the busy hubbub in which to study, there is now a quiet study room in the Allan Glen's building.

You can find this room on the first floor, Allan Glen's Building, Room AG 1/7 (at the end of the corridor and through the double doors). Core opening hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Thursday, and closing at 3.30 pm on Friday.

The Quiet Zone offers learners the chance to study in an area free from mobile phones, chatter and music. There is also a range of reference study material available to use in the room.

Please note... As this area is intended for solo study only, no group work or discussion can be allowed.

Saturday opening of The Learning Curve - from 25th October

Student inductions by podcast

If you missed the chance of an induction tour of The Learning Curve at the start of the block, you are welcome to try our new induction podcast.

Learners can deposit their matriculation cards and borrow an MP3 with a pre-loaded induction podcast, which will give them a general introduction to The Learning Curve and the facilities offered here.

The podcast is also available from the Novell box when logged on to the College network.

Term time opening hours academic session 2008-09

With the start of Block 1 in the new academic session of 2008-09, The Learning Curve is now open and provides an enquiry service during the following hours:

Monday to Thursday 8.30 am to 8.00 pm
Friday 8.30 am to 4.45 pm

To complement our Saturday class provision, The Learning Curve will be open on Saturday mornings from Saturday 25 October to Saturday 29 November 2008 between 9am and 12.30pm.

Computers are switched off 15 minutes before closing time.

Information on closures for the September bank holiday weekend and the October break will be given in detail nearer the time.

Summer opening hours

The Learning Curve remains open to students and staff through the summer vacation with access to computing and printing facilities, borrowing materials and reference work.

Open: Monday to Friday 8.30 am until 4.45 pm (PCs are switched off at 4.30 om)

Please note - your ability to borrow material and access to the internet will depend upon your course registration. However, all users are welcome to use the material for reference purposes. Check with Learning Curve staff if you are unsure what your status is.

Subject displays

Have you had a look at the new subject displays in The Learning Curve...?

Books and electronic resources on a featured topic are highlighted in a table-top display at The Learning Curve enquiry desk.

The subject focus changes weekly and aims to raise student awareness of what is on offer through bookmarks, resource guides and pointers to relevant classmarks. Recent displays have covered philosophy, sociology, hairdressing and Scots law.

Changes to the PC booking system in The Learning Curve

To increase student access to PCs in The Learning Curve, from Monday 21st April we will be introducing a number of changes:

We now have an additional PC on the upper level which is a print-only station, allowing students quick access to printing facilities only. This is because many students ask for PCs solely to print off class work.

The maximum booking time will now be for a two hour period in the mid level tier. This will allow us to make more bookings, for more students.

During lunch and tea breaks the maximum booking will be for half an hour. Again, most students at this time of day only want the use of a PC for short time.

No class or group bookings will be taken during break times.

Canteen computers will time-out after half-an-hour to allow more students access.

We hope these changes will help and ask for your patience in putting them in place. Your feedback will also be welcome.

Now available on Athens - 19th Century British Library newspapers

With an Athens login, you can now access the collection of forty-eight 19th Century British national and regional newspapers, from the British Library. They are very useful for social history projects (as well as indulging in serendipity).

Choose InfoTrac from the Athens resources page, then select the historic papers option. Papers can be viewed as cropped text or as full pages. For further help in using this resource, please contact the Enquiry Desk on ext 6240.

Virus problem - urgent action required

There a serious problem with a virus affecting PCs, laptops and flash drives within the College. Please be aware that all Learning Curve users MUST regularly scan their flash drives for viruses with the College's antivirus software, Sophos.

There will be NO ACCESS to the USB/flash drive on any computer in The Learning Curve from Monday, 3rd March. This is to try and eliminate the virus. You will be able to access your I:\ drive during this time - so please take the chance NOW to scan your flash drive and transfer any documents you are using onto your space on the I:\ drive.

There is a guide to using the Sophos software available at the entrance to The Learning Curve - but if you require help in checking your flash drive, please ask staff at the Enquiry Desk

Access to the British Library Archival Sound Recordings

Central College staff and students now have access to the British Library Archival Sound Recordings through Athens.

This is an extensive collection of recordings of music, debates, literature, drama, environmental sounds and cultural history. The range of material available makes it a valuable tool for teaching and learning in a further education setting.

Quiet study area opening Wednesday 7th November

There will be a quiet study area open to students in the Central Business Learning Zone (CBLZ) from Wednesday, 7th November. It will be on the top floor of the CBLZ and has seating for 40 students.

Students are welcome to use this facility during class hours, when the CBLZ is open.
